Frequently Asked Questions

How many images can I use?
You can upload between 3 and 50 images at once. The tool will automatically fit them into your chosen layout. If your layout uses fewer cells than the images you uploaded, only the first N images (matching cell count) are used.
What layouts are available?
There are 9 layout templates: Grid 2×2, Grid 3×3, Grid 4×4 (equal-cell grids), Horizontal Strip (all images in a single row), Vertical Strip (all images in a single column), Big Center (one large central image with smaller images around it), Diagonal Steps (images arranged diagonally), Newspaper (one large image on the left with three smaller ones stacked on the right), and Random Mosaic (varied cell sizes for an organic look).
How do I sort images by color?
After uploading images, use the Sort buttons above the thumbnail strip. Click "Color" to sort images by their dominant color hue. The dominant color is computed entirely in-browser using the HTML5 Canvas API — a 50×50 pixel sample of each image is analyzed to extract the average RGB values, which are then converted to HSL for hue-based sorting.
What resolution is the output?
You set the canvas width between 600px and 4000px. The height is calculated automatically based on your chosen layout and aspect ratio. The actual pixel dimensions are shown below the preview canvas in real time. For print quality, we recommend 2400px or wider at 300 DPI.
Can I use it on mobile?
Yes! The Mosaic Maker works on modern mobile browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox). The UI is responsive and adapts to smaller screens. However, for very large canvas widths (3000px+) or many images, performance may be slower on mobile devices due to hardware limitations. We recommend keeping canvas width under 1800px on mobile.
Is my data private? Are my images uploaded anywhere?
Absolutely. Every image you upload stays entirely in your browser's memory. No data is ever sent to any server. The entire mosaic generation, color analysis, and export process happens locally using the HTML5 Canvas API and JavaScript. You can even use this tool offline after the page has loaded.
